it's funny-when i'm walking outside i get a sweet, quick scent of wood and youre special smell, it always catches me off guard but once i realize that it just means you're there with me, i feel a wave of reassurance and my heart warms up. there isn't a month that goes by that i don't think about you, and how sweet of a human being you had been. when i try to explain you to friends, i just say 'grandpa' and leave it at that because that's what you were to me; my grandpa. i never got the chance to let you know but you truly left a mark in my life, i will always and forever remember you and that beautiful house that you built. the one time that we stayed in that house, after you passed away, i could feel your presence but i also felt so unbearably sad that i couldn't just climb out my bedroom window and say hi to you, that i wouldn't hear the zoom of your red scooter or of you hard at work building or painting something. i miss your smile and your voice. your house is the one place, the only place, i can remember being completely happy, feeling completely whole, and i thank you for giving me that house and those memories. from feeding geckos and cats, 'cooking' food, eating kiwi, looking at the stars with my papi on the roof, making houses of the hollowed out bushes, adventuring in the beach below to getting a bead stuck in my nostril, i will never forget my summers in your home. and you.
love always, sofi
